Yoga Retreat, Portugal
A yoga retreat in a remote valley, in the stunning foothills of the Serra de Estrela mountains, central Portugal. The owners spent the last thirteen years restoring old stone cottages, building new facilities and planting five hectares of forested gardens with the help of neighbours and local artisans.
Traditional stone terraces frame the hillsite plateau. At their feet, a pond stretches across the terrace in the woods. Nestled between pine trees, a raft. Formed by roundwood timber it balances on half a dozen of anchoring plinths. Floating above the pond, the cross laminated timber decked raft carries a lightweight timber structure, creating a tray for the green butterfly roof. Between the frame the large door elements fold open fully. A wooden patio juts out over the hill edge. Soft light beams into the open space.
After exercising, meditation and sunset await, on the curved, wood covered stone terraces around the pond. The little energy which is needed, is provided by solar panels mounted on the green roof. Inside, ply lined cubicles give privacy to the guest for changing and showering, for the kitchenette and storage.
During winter, a stove provides the heat, suspended from the roof, the wood sourced sustainably from the surrounding re-wilded area. The yoga raft is formed by natural materials throughout and embedded in and respecting nature. The glazed enclosure allows sweeping views and connects the steeply sloping landscape.
The tranquil, almost dematerialised setting forms the backdrop for the body to unwind, the mind to freely drift.
